Being an American living in Europe makes for a rather odd perspective on American politics. My first stop in reading news about events in the USA is almost never based there — usually it’s a British site, because it’s good reporting and good writing in English. Thanks to Google News and Yahoo News I can get a quick cross-section of a big chunk of the coverage both in and out of the USA. And I’m frequently more than grateful for the European perspective, because since 9/11 I’ve had the feeling that American journalism has collectively dropped the ball with so much self-censorship. Not to mention that certain extremely right-wing news sources are being widely regarded as “fair and balanced“.
But I was refreshed to see plenty of good old American journalistic outrage after we all heard Tom DeLay use the word “terrorism” in connection with the Schiavo case. I think we need a revision of Godwin’s law about now, to include the word “terrorism”. Right away.
And by the way, here’s another good source of meta-meta commentary on the issue.
